J.N. DING DARLING NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Great Blue Heron The refuge is located on the north end of crowded Sanibel-Captiva Island just outside of Ft Myers, Florida.
The brackish waters of San Carlos Bay border it on the east. These warm sub-tropical waters provide a year round habitat for resident and migrating birds.

There is a five-mile wildlife drive as well as hiking and canoe trails. The refuge claims to be host for over 300 bird species, 50 types of reptile and 30 different types of mammals. Stop by the visitor's center for maps and current sightings.

On a typical day you may see Brown Pelican, Osprey, Mottled Duck, Roseate Spoonbills, Blue Herons - Great and Little, Snowy Egret and the ubiquitous Common Grackle. In winter look for Blue-winged Teal, Red-breasted Mergansers and the beautiful White Pelican. In fall and spring you will be treated to sounds and sights of the Warblers, Vireos and other songbirds.

Note: The park is closed on Fridays.

There is a toll to be paid to get on to Sanibel-Captiva Island and a park entrance fee.

Best Viewing

Just after sunrise until about 9am and late in the afternoon after about 3pm. During the winter, any time of the day is great for wading birds and visiting ducks. Be sure to plan to visit as early as possible, during the peak season it can become very crowded.

We suggest renting a canoe to see the best that Ding Darling has to offer.
