Joe Overstreet Fish Camp

Snail Kite
Snail Kite takes to the sky

The fish camp is located on the eastern shore of Lake Kissimmee in central Florida.

The Joe Overstreet fish camp offers a small picnic area, boat ramp and rest-room facilities. We visited the area at mid-morning. Here is what we saw:

  • Snail Kite, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron and Great Blue Heron
  • Crested Caracara, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture,
  • American Kestrel, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-bellied Woodpecker
  • Cardinal, Wild Turkey, Gray Catbird, Palm Warbler, Red-winged Blackbird, Mourning Dove
  • Sandhill Crane, Anhinga, and Double Crested Cormorant

DIRECTIONS

Take State Road 523, south from St. Cloud, Fla., for about 20 miles.
Look for the yellow "Lake Kissimmee" sign on the west side of the road.
Turn on to the fish camp road and drive very slowly looking for Sandhill Crane, Bald Eagle, Crested Caracara, Palm Warbler, Grey Catbird, Red-shouldered Hawk and the Red-tailed Hawk.

At the camp, pull into the parking area and look south along the lake shore for the Snail Kite (formerly known as the Everglade Kite), and if you are there at the right time, you'll be treated to Whooping Crane as well. Bring a lunch, there are soft drinks and snacks available but no dining facilities.
