LAKE WOODRUFF NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
DeLeon Springs, Florida


DESCRIPTION

The Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge is one-half mile west of the town of DeLeon Springs, Florida. The entrance is about an hour's drive north from Orlando, or about an hour's drive west from Daytona Beach, Florida and is 6 miles northwest of Deland, Florida.

Lake Woodruff was established in 1964 as a migratory bird refuge. It contains over 19,500 acres of marsh, swamp and upland that borders the St. Johns River. It is an ideal habitat for many birds in Central Florida.

WILDLIFE

There is an abundance of wildlife year round. There are approximately 200 species of birds, 42 species of mammals, 58 species of reptiles, 33 species of amphibians and 68 species of fishes.

During the fall and winter seasons, 21 species of ducks use the refuge. Ring-necked ducks account for over one-half the wintering waterfowl population in most years.

WALKING TOUR

The wetlands are divided into several areas divided by raised berm roads. There are no vehicles permitted on the berms accept those used by the park service empolyees.

The walks are easy over flat ground and the park service has placed concrete benches at comfortable distances around the lakes.

Be sure to visit the elevated overlook donated by the local chapter of the Audubon Society. It's at the the northwest corner of pool 1.
